Google bill H.R. 1022. The VA shooting will be used as a pretext for gun control. Even "conservative" FOX news is calling for it, because the patsy was a "terrorist" (oh yeah, we cant let the people have guns, or theyll all turn into TERRORISTS!)...

These are the lies the corporate media want you to believe. They intentionally twist information to convince you they are right. What they dont tell you is that this process is integral to disarming you, both mentally and literally. Your rights are in the way of profits and power, and corporate leaders of all kinds would like nothing more than cheap labor(SLAVES!)

Conservatives-THEY WAN'T YOUR GUNS. DONT LET IT HAPPEN.

Liberals- WAKE UP! Like your rights? Yeah? Well how about Hitler and Stalin, do you like them? Well they had huge gun confiscation closely followed by the LARGEST MASS GENOCIDE CAMPAIGNS IN HISTORY.
Get a gun, its your duty in a free society. Thats if you want to keep it...
Unless of course you want another Hitler in our generation, which we might already have....

Shape-shifting 'smart dust' may explore alien worlds

00:01 18 April 2007
NewScientist.com news service
Will Knight

Thousands of miniscule wireless sensors, or "smart dust," could one-day be used to explore other planets, swirling across the landscape by subtly altering their shape. At least, that's the exotic vision put forward in new computer simulations.

Several different research groups are developing tiny smart dust devices. Each is a few cubic millimetres in volume and can perform simple sensing tasks and relay messages to other such devices over distances of less than a metre. Together, they can be sprinkled across an area or throughout a building, and used to sense chemicals or vibrations, and relay messages from one another back to a central control.

John Barker, an electronics researcher at the University of Glasgow in the UK decided to investigate whether a cloud of similar smart dust "motes" could navigate across the surface of Mars from one point to another, simply by modifying their shape.

In his experiment, 30,000 motes were released on a simulated Martian surface. Each device in the simulation could sense its position and switch between two shapes – smooth or dimpled (rough). While the smooth motes were carried easily on the Martian wind, the rough ones experienced enough drag to cause them to fall back to the surface.

This allowed the motes to navigate by shape-shifting. By programming the virtual motes with a simple set of rules, Barker found that most could be made to follow a predefined course. In his simulations, about 70% were able to successfully navigate a 20-kilometre track.

Acceptable losses

Barker employed a technique known as a Monte Carlo simulation to develop his computer model. It used random numbers to reproduce the erratic behaviour of the Martin wind. "If you've got a steady wind, it's a waste of time," he says. "But, if you've got a lot of turbulence – as you have on Mars – it works."

Barker hopes to interest astronomers in his idea, pointing out that expendability would be a key advantage. "You'd actually lose a hell of a lot," he told New Scientist. "But that's the point."

Barker stresses that his research is purely speculative at this stage, since no devices can yet perform like those in his simulation. But he adds that, in theory, the same trick could work in other turbulent environments – like in a liquid or in deep space – with the motes riding solar wind.

And Barker is confident that suitable motes will be developed before long. For example, progress in electronic manufacturing should help miniaturise smart dust while electro-active polymers could be used to change their shape, for a very small amount of power. Furthermore, he says, larger landing modules on the surface of a planet could transmit signals that tell a cloud of motes exactly where they are.

Synchronised messages

Having a cloud of smart dust relay messages over long distances would be a serious challenge. But Barker suggests that their radio signals could be synchronised, possibly allowing messages to be transmitted over many kilometres.

Other smart dust experts also see promise in the area. "I do think that smart dust will be used for planetary exploration," says Kris Pister an expert at the University of California at Berkeley in the US, who is also investigating the possibility.

"It is a serious possibility," adds Michael Sailor, who works on smart dust at the University of California, San Diego, US. "The distributed networked approach means that individual devices don't have to be that reliable – if one mote goes down, another fills its place."

However, Sailor points out that there would also be drawbacks to using smart dust for inter-planetary missions. "The smaller you make it, the harder it becomes to place high-fidelity, high-sensitivity sensors in the device," he says. "This is the promise and the challenge of nanotechnology."

Barker's work will be presented at the at the Royal Astronomical Society's Annual Meeting, at the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, on 18 April.

'Deflector' shields could protect future astronauts

01:23 18 April 2007
NewScientist.com news service
David Shiga

Magnetic "deflector shields" could one day guard astronauts against dangerous space radiation, if experiments now underway pay off.

Exposure to energetic charged particles could put astronauts on lengthy missions at increased risk of cancer and even cognitive problems (see Future Mars astronauts have radiation on their minds). The particles come from the solar wind and also from supernovae and still-unidentified sources outside the solar system.

The Earth's magnetic field protects spacecraft in low-Earth orbits, such as the space shuttle and International Space Station, from such particles. But astronauts journeying to Mars or living on the Moon would benefit from no such protection.

A radiation shield that mimics the deflection properties of the Earth's magnetic field could one day protect astronauts on long missions. An imaginative view – not to scale – shows a spacecraft protected from solar activity by such a shield (Illustration Ruth Bamford et al/Rutherford Appleton Laboratory)

Now, US and European plans for long-term missions to the Moon and Mars have sparked renewed interest in the problem of radiation shielding.

One group at the University of Washington in Seattle, US, has just completed a round of experiments investigating one possible approach, using a bubble of charged particles, or plasma, as a deflector shield (see Plasma bubble could protect astronauts on Mars trip).

Now, a second team has begun deflector shield experiments of their own. The team, led by Ruth Bamford of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK, hopes to eventually fly a test satellite surrounded by a cloud of plasma in space.

Test mission

The concept is based on the fact that plasma clouds have strong magnetic and electric fields that can in principle deflect charged particles.

The group has begun testing a simple magnetic field generator that consists of loops of wire with electric current running through them.

Within a few months, they plan to use it to trap a cloud of plasma and test its ability to deflect particles inside a vacuum chamber about 2 metres long. By the end of 2007, they hope to test it in a chamber about twice as large, using higher speed particles.

Eventually they hope to attract funding for a demonstrator mission that uses wires around a spacecraft to generate a magnetic field that can contain a plasma cloud. "Hopefully we'll be able to fly a test mission in the next, say, 10 to 15 years," says team member Robert Bingham of Rutherford Appleton Lab.

Early promise

It would not be the first time a satellite had released a plasma cloud in space. In 1984, one of three satellites in a mission called the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE), which was designed to study the basic physics of plasmas, produced a plasma cloud thousands of kilometres across.

The cloud protected the satellites from the solar wind, but the mission had no way of containing the plasma, so it simply drifted away after a while, leaving the satellites unprotected.

Some researchers say the deflector shield concept shows early promise. John Slough, who leads the University of Washington group, says its NASA-funded feasibility study showed they were able to deflect charged particles with a plasma bubble and a wire mesh measuring a few centimetres across. "The question is, can you do it on a larger scale," Slough says.

Disappearing shield

But Frank Cucinotta, NASA's chief radiation health officer at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, US, says there are drawbacks to such 'active shielding' methods compared to simply using extra layers of material to block out the dangerous particles.

For example, if something breaks in the device generating a plasma shield, the whole shield could disappear, whereas material shielding has no moving parts to break down.

He says materials like polyethylene could provide effective shielding, at least against particles from the Sun. As for cosmic rays from outside the solar system, he says there is a lot of uncertainty in how big the health risk really is. "We will not be able to understand how poorly or efficiently shielding works until more biological knowledge is obtained," he told New Scientist.

Bamford is presenting the work this week at the Royal Astronomical Society's National Astronomy Meeting in Preston, UK.

University 'warned about gunman'

BBC
Wednesday April 18, 2007

A professor who taught a student whose gun rampage at Virginia Tech left 32 people dead says she warned university officials about his behaviour.

Lucinda Roy said she became concerned after Cho Seung-hui wrote disturbing pieces for a creative writing class.

The 23-year-old South Korean has been described as a loner and an introvert.

Virginia's governor has vowed to review authorities' handling of the shootings amid claims that the US university did not do enough to protect students.

Police said Cho Seung-hui killed 30 people before committing suicide. He is also believed to have killed two students earlier in the day.

'Repeated' warnings

Speaking to US news network CNN, Ms Roy, a former chairwoman of Virginia Tech's English Department, said that Cho's creative writing professor came to her about his writings in late 2005.

Ms Roy said that she was so disturbed by what she found that she decided to take him out of the classroom for one-to-one tutoring.

"I was so uncomfortable that I didn't feel that I could leave him in the classroom," she told CNN.

Ms Roy also said that she "repeatedly" spoke to university authorities about the student. Her warnings should have been taken more seriously, she said.

The university has not responded to her comments.

A former classmate of Cho's, Ian MacFarlane, has also posted on the AOL news website two plays he says that Cho wrote.

In an internet blog, he described Cho's work as "like something out of a nightmare", with "really twisted, macabre violence".

The plays purporting to be by Cho are strewn with obscenities and one concludes with a man killing his 13-year-old stepson.

"When I first heard about the multiple shootings at Virginia Tech yesterday, my first thought was about my friends, and my second thought was 'I bet it was Seung Cho'," he wrote.

Investigation

The university is coming under increasing scrutiny over its role in events, both before the shootings and as events unfolded.

Speaking at a news briefing on Tuesday, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine said an independent panel would carry out a "thorough" review of the authorities' handling of the disaster.

He said the panel would be appointed at the request of the university and would begin its inquiry immediately.

Gov Kaine warned against making snap judgements, saying he had "nothing but loathing" for those who took the tragedy and "make it their political hobby horse to ride".

Monday's shootings occurred in two separate locations, two hours apart.

The first took place at 0715 (1215 GMT), at West Ambler Johnston Hall dormitory, where a man and a woman were shot dead.

Then, at about 0915 (1415 GMT), 30 people were killed in the second shooting at Norris Hall, about half a mile (800 metres) away, on the same campus.

Some students have complained that they received no warning from the university until an e-mail more than two hours after the first incident.

They also said that the university should have locked down the campus immediately after the shooting at the dormitory.

But university officials defended their handling of the incidents, saying they acted on the information that they had at the time.

The New York Times, meanwhile, reports that police may have lost time pursuing the wrong man.

Citing police documents, the daily said that police went to question the boyfriend of the woman shot dead at West Ambler Johnston Hall, after being told by her roommate that he had guns at his house.

Reports of the Norris Hall shootings came in as they were questioning him, the daily said.

On Tuesday, US President George W Bush addressed a memorial service for the victims of the shootings, calling it "a day of sadness for our entire nation".

The Virginia Tech Shootings: Pretext For Disarmament of America?

On the 28th of April 1996, a gunman went crazy in Tasmania, an island state south of mainland Australia in an incident that has become known as the Port Arthur massacre. It resulted in the total disarmament of Australians, via the federal government's gun buy-back scheme. Huge piles of firearms were destroyed.

The Port Arthur massacre was highly suspect.
>
Martin Bryant, the intellectually handicapped patsy used as the scapegoat in Port Arthur, April '96.

The Port Arthur Massacre

There is reason to think the Port Arthur massacre was planned as early 1987
when, after a specially called Premier's meeting in Hobart in December 1987, the
New South Wales Labour Premier, Mr. Barry Unsworth stated, "there
would be no effective gun control in Australia until there was a massacre in
Tasmania"

On Sunday, 28 April 1996, at a sleepy little tourist location known as Port
Arthur, something went down that will long live in memory of Australia's
collective psyche. An unknown professional combat shooter opened
fire in the Broad Arrow Cafe at Port Arthur in Tasmania. In less than a minute
20 people lay dead, 19 of them killed with single shots to the head, fired from
the right hip of the fast-moving shooter.

The awesome display of combat marksmanship was blamed on intellectually
impaired Martin Bryant, who was held in illegal strict solitary confinement for
more than 120 days, until he was "ready" to plead guilty. There was no
trial. Within a matter of weeks legislation was passed to removed semi-automatic
weapons from the Australian population and a gun buy-back proceeded. It is now
illegal to own any semi-automatic gun in Australia.

The Port Arthur Massacre has come to be known in conspiracy circles as a
"psyop". The definition of a psyop is a psychological operation or an
event designed to drum up public support for some piece of legislation that
would be otherwise be unpopular and probably be defeated.

It is one of the signs of a propaganda campaign when the media continuously
plays up scenes that are designed to appeal to gut level instincts to soften
people up for the solution to be offered.

The media were totally
oriented around sensationalising the distress and trauma, played the scenes over
and over, always cutting to updates on any developments and in effect the public
were bombarded continuously day in and day out for weeks over the issue. At the same time
a long list of facts or discrepancies were overlooked.

Any calls for a royal commission fell on deaf ears, the media were later
instructed not to talk about the subject anymore and the files have been closed for 30 years.

The Port Arthur massacre occurred on 28 April there was legislation prepared
by mid May with plans for a national buyback of automatic and semi-automatic
rifles.

Joe Vialls, an independent investigator with thirty years direct experience
of international military and oil field operations

"Though Australia has tens of thousands of skilled sporting shooters it
has very few combat veterans, and even fewer special forces personnel trained to
kill large numbers of people quickly in an enclosed space like the Broad Arrow
Cafe, which is roughly the same size as mock-up rooms used for practicing the
rescue of hostages being held in confined spaces by armed terrorists.

"It is hard to kill quickly
under such circumstances for a number of unpleasant reasons,
including
the fact that shot people tend to fall against other people, shielding the
latter from subsequent bullets.

"Targets therefore have to be
shot in a careful sequence with split-second timing
to maximise kill
rates.

"Whoever was on the trigger in Tasmania managed a kill rate well above
that required of a fully trained soldier, an impossible task for a man with
Martin Bryant's mid-sixties IQ and his total lack of military training, which is
an interesting but largely unimportant observation because we have already
proved in absolute scientific terms that Bryant could not have acted
alone."

This man might have been an indispensable asset stopping speeding
car-bombers in Beirut, but his professional skills were far too conspicuous for
Port Arthur."

Virginia Tech Shooting 'Oddities'

"The average 'nut' is not this well armed, nor able to kill with such precision, and so quickly." --Comment by CLG reader, Blueridge

Breaking: Chicago Tribune: Alleged gunman left note in dorm room [My theory on its announced contents: "I did this for Al Qaeda in Iraq. I've come to the US becuase the Democrat congress wants a timeline for troop withdrawal. P.S.: Rosie O'Donnell is wrong. Osama bin Laden did carry out the 9/11 terrorist attacks. If NSA wiretaps were allowed, I wouldn't have been able to do this."]

More from Blueridge, who lives in WV:
I have been watching Roanoke local TV with excellent coverage. Brian Williams of NBC interviewed two students, one who was shot. The following facts about the shooter emerged as they met face to face:
1. did not recognize from campus
2. reloaded clips (semi auto pistol(s)) very fast
3. "looked trained" in use of weapons, pro
4. wearing red cap, vest (impression of trained "beret")
5. authorities said he had "no ID" on him
6. gunman wearing all black (pro wear)
7. camera phone recorded "blast" after fired shots.

The school police stood down for two hours, without notifying students or faculty. During the press conference, they said they often run "drills." School president and campus police chief were absolutely emotionless during both conferences, very matter of fact. Police not providing ID, not providing weapon details... Why?

AFT source tells NBC News that the gunman was not a Virginia Tech student, but someone who had access to the dorm.

Authorities Tentatively ID Va. Tech Gunman 16 Apr 2007 Authorities say they've tentatively identified the gunman behind Monday's shooting rampage at Virginia Tech that killed 32 victims, but they're not releasing any information yet. Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum told reporters that two weapons were recovered, but he declined to describe them.

Gunman may have made 3 bomb threats to test 'security response' 16 Apr 2007 Authorities were investigating whether the gunman who killed 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history was a Chinese man who arrived in the United States last year on a student visa. The 24-year-old man arrived in San Francisco on United Airlines on Aug. 7 on a visa issued in Shanghai, the source said. Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus' security response, the source said. The exits to the buildings where the shootings occurred were chained by the shooter, the source said.

A 'person-of-interest' was being interviewed while the second shooting occurred. He was not a student. --Press conference, Blacksburg, VA

CNN: 'The Virginia Tech killer chained doors shut at his second shooting site before going into a German class and opening fire.'

VA Tech wasn't locked down for two hours, after the first shooting was reported at 7:15 AM. The shooter apparently made it over to the *other side of campus* and *carried out more shootings,* unmolested, two hours later!

It has not been confirmed whether or not the shooter is a student. [How did the shooter access the buildings, when a scanned ID is required for access?]
First report: The suspect was led away in handcuffs.
Second report: The suspect was killed.
Third report: The suspect killed himself.
Fourth report: There were two suspects.
Individual had same style of guns (*two* handguns) used by FBI agents, a 'high-powered' weapon and the shootings were 'well-planned.'
MSNBC's FBI profiler: 'students lined up and shot execution style'
19 hours after the first shooting, the shooter(s) has/have not been identified. [00:15 EDT 17 Apr 2007 Note: The shooter has finally been identified.
At press conf., VT Tech.: We thought the shooter (7:15 AM) had left the state. ?

Regardless, it appears that the Gonzales testmony will receive little coverage tomorrow. Oops, strike that: Senate postpones to Thursday the gonzales hearing, in light of VA Tech shootings. Can we expect new Blackwater USA contract$ to 'secure' college campuses? --LRP

Articles of Impeachment to Be Filed On Cheney By Mary Ann Akers 17 Apr 2007 Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio)... declared in a letter sent to his Democratic House colleagues this morning that he plans to file articles of impeachment against Vice President [sic] Dick Cheney... Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to impeach the president, vice president and "all civil Officers of the United States" for "treason, bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." Sources tell the Sleuth that in light of the mass killings at Virginia Tech Monday, Kucinich's impeachment plans have been put on hold. There will be no action this week, they say.

Gunman ID'd as student; tests tie same gun to both attacks 17 Apr 2007 A Virginia Tech senior [Cho Seung-Hui] from South Korea killed at least 30 people locked inside a classroom building in the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history, the university and police said Tuesday. Ballistics tests also found that one of the guns used in that attack was also used in a shooting two hours earlier at a dorm that left two people dead, Virginia State Police said. Cho committed suicide after the attacks, and there was no indication Tuesday of any possible motive.

Anger mounts over response to massacre 17 Apr 2007 (Blacksburg, VA) Parents and students at the scene of the worst school shooting in US history on Monday criticised the university for waiting too long to alert people a killer may be on the loose.

Police Cite Person of Interest in Va. Tech Dorm Killing; Dead Gunman Yet to Be ID'd 16 Apr 2007 In a press conference tonight, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger gave a detailed timeline of the morning's tragic events. He said a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting at a dormitory was made at approximately 7:15 a.m. While police were trying to assess what they first believed was a domestic dispute, they received a second 9-1-1 call, nearly two and a half hours later, that reported shootings on the opposite side of campus. According to the Virginia Police Chief Wendell Flinchum, officials have not definitively linked the two shootings. Campus police have identified a person of interest who is not currently in police custody.

At least 33 people are dead in the worst mass shooting in modern American history. Police at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Va., said that the shootings happened at a dormitory and then at a classroom on opposite sides of the university campus. Some students are questioning why administrators did not stop classes after the first shooting, and why it took more than two hours to inform the university community via email about the shootings.
